After our Cessna singles reach 10 - 30 years in age the control cable tensions are lost and prior maintenance, worn rod-ends, rollers and such only add to a poor performance condition. Recent maintenance such as Flap roller kit and not properly rigging Flap & Ailerons afterwards will also cause the Aircraft to no longer fly straight without excessive trim input.

Arbitrarily adjusting loose control cable tensions in any of the Flight Control System without proper rigging of that system can cause other irregularities in Flight. If these conditions are not diagnosed properly, other systems may be adjusted to compensate therefore the vicious cycle begins. The end result over the years is poor performance, Left or Right Hand wing heaviness, sloppy feel to the Flight Controls and an Aircraft that will only fly “ball center” with opposing control input correction.

What to do?

A complete flight control system rigging will generally take 2 full days labor. If several post maintenance Flights are required and eccentric cam adjustments this could add an additional day of Flight test for wings of this design. This is often the case due to STOL Kit misalignment or fuselage twist/control twist due to prior accident/damage history. On Cantilever design wings the trim tabs are easily accessible and can be accomplished in one or two Flights.
